Romantic break in Bruges

  • The Spiegelrei is a romantic spot in Bruges just outside the tourist centre. The oldest pub in Bruges, Café Vlissinge, is at walking distance and certainly worth a visit! In 2015, they celebrate their 500th birthday. If you like the charm and authenticity of a very old pub, you must go over there and try their own beer.   • The gates of Bruges were built in three phases. In the first phase, four bridges and four gates gave access to a 10th century castle (the current Burg). The Blinde Ezelsbrug formed the bridge to the South Gate. ‘Blind donkey’ presumably refers to the practice of blindfolding donkeys, who had to step in a treadmill of a malt factory, to prevent them to become dizzy.   • Hidden between the Vismarkt (Fish Market) and the Burg, the Groenerei is a beautiful spot in Bruges. This small canal was part of the first city rampart and although in the middle of Bruges’ Golden Triangle, a quiet, green, romantic little street with a beautiful view on the back facades of ancient buildings.   • Frank Van Acker was the mayor of Bruges between 1977 en 1992. Thanks to him, the Bruges’ city centre was renovated and cars (Van Acker himself had no driver's license) had to allow room for cyclists and pedestrians, and asphalt was replaced by cobblestones.
